The spirituality of fasting

We are human beings. Our external organs are visible. From the feet to the head, all organs are visible. But the external organs cannot do or accomplish anything on their own, unless the main vital force, instinct or will is added to the external organs. The same is true of the external body structure and its organs. Nothing can be achieved by the external organs without the support of vital force and will. It is easily seen from this that the efforts of the fasting person to abandon external food and drink, avoid lust, abandon sinful conduct, and abandon falsehood will be successful only when these are combined with the vital force and will. This is basically the spiritual sphere of fasting. And referring to this sphere, Allah, the Almighty, has said: ‘Layallakkum tattaqun’ meaning ‘that you may attain taqwa.’

This verse clearly indicates that fasting has a special role in acquiring the power of piety or piety. Because, through fasting, a special power is acquired in controlling the urges of the instincts. In fact, that is the main foundation of piety or piety. Where the presence of the main foundation is not observed, there is no value in displaying the external organs. We know that human instincts are misguided by the urges of six passions. These are lust, anger, greed, delusion, alcohol and jealousy. These passions pollute and contaminate the spiritual sphere of fasting. Through fasting, the passions become suppressed and weakened, and rays of light of righteousness and purity radiate everywhere within. At the same time, a pollution-free environment and environment are created, which further expands and broadens the horizon of piety and piety. The main success of fasting lies within this.

Patience and tolerance are of immense importance in the overall development and advancement of human life. A person who is impatient cannot achieve anything. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) has clearly said: ‘This month is the month of patience and forbearance.’ The bond of patience must be kept unbroken in observing the fasts to be performed in this month. Without patience and forbearance, fasting will not be possible at all. Patience, endurance, sacrifice and a spirit of moderation must be maintained in all parts of fasting. If greed and lust are not curbed, it is not possible to refrain from eating, drinking, lust and sinful activities from morning to evening. If sacrifice and patience are lost, it becomes impossible to endure the burning pain of hunger and thirst. Therefore, fasting for a month teaches people patience and tolerance and inspires and inspires them to adopt a spirit of sacrifice. As a result, fasting people become interested in showing kindness to hungry people.

It is essential for those who fast to observe the fast with faith and determination. In this regard, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: ‘Whoever observes the fast of the month of Ramadan with faith and determination, his previous and future sins will be forgiven.’ Two important words have been used in this hadith. One of them is faith and the other is determination. The word faith indicates the meaning that one should observe the fast with the belief that fasting is obligatory by Allah. As a follower of the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), this fast must be observed. It cannot be done otherwise. And the word determination highlights the meaning that one should observe the fast only for the sake of gaining the pleasure and approval of Allah. Not for showing off or attracting the attention of society. One should observe the fast with the firm conviction that through this one can obtain a special reward and exchange from Allah. This includes the forgiveness of sins of life. This is a special grace from Allah. He will certainly favor those who fast through it.

Habib Kibriya Muhammadur Rasulullah (PBUH) has said: ‘Fasting is like a shield’. A shield or armor prevents and thwarts the attacks and blows of the enemy. In this worldly life, Allah also keeps the fasting person free from the book of sins and evil deeds. Because of this purity and cleanliness, he will be able to be freed from hell in the hereafter. For this reason, every fasting person must refrain from all kinds of sinful acts. Obscene talk, gossip, commotion and noise should be avoided. At the same time, one should constantly devote oneself to the remembrance of Allah and avoid all kinds of knowledge, intelligence and acts that are against conscience. By doing this, the spiritual excellence of fasting will be achieved.
